Spanish bank business days and when a transfer arrives

The days banks may not process standard transfers, region by region, and the day yours will arrive.

    What a business day is for your bank

    Under Spanish law, a business day is a day on which your bank, or the payee's, is open to carry out the payment 1. Weekends aren't, and holidays depend on the bank: if you opened your account online, the calendar of the place where the bank has its registered office applies 1. That's why the tool counts the national holidays and those of the region you choose as non-business days.

    SEPA transfers between Spanish banks are exchanged and settled on every day TARGET, the Eurosystem's payment system, is open, even on Spanish holidays such as 12 October 2,3. TARGET only closes at weekends, on 1 January, Good Friday, Easter Monday, 1 May and 25 and 26 December 3. So many transfers sent on a holiday arrive sooner than our estimate, which is the longest it can take.

    How long a standard transfer can take

    1. Your bank receives the order on the day you give it, if that's a business day and before its cut-off time; otherwise on the next business day. Each bank sets its own cut-off time, near the end of the day 1.
    2. From then, your bank has until the end of the next business day to get the money to the payee's bank. For a paper order, one more day 1.
    3. The payee's bank must credit the money to their account as soon as it arrives, with that same day's value date 1.

    Instant transfers

    An instant transfer arrives within seconds, on any day and at any time, weekends and holidays included 4. Since 9 October 2025 banks in the euro area must let you send them, and since 9 January 2025 they can't charge you more for them than for a standard transfer 5. The old €15,000 limit per payment in Spain's system no longer exists, although your bank can set its own limits and you can ask for one 6,4. Bizum runs on these same instant transfers 7.

    Does a transfer arrive on a holiday?

    If it's instant, yes. If it's standard, it depends on the banks: the system that settles SEPA transfers works every day TARGET is open, even on Spanish holidays 2, but a bank may not process orders on a day that isn't a business day for it 1.

    When does a transfer sent on a Friday afternoon arrive?

    If you send it after the cut-off time, your bank receives it on Monday, if that's a business day, and the money arrives by Tuesday at the latest. An instant transfer arrives within seconds.

    Which days is TARGET closed?

    Saturdays and Sundays, 1 January, Good Friday, Easter Monday, 1 May and 25 and 26 December 3.
