Transfers

How long does a bank transfer take?

Standard or instant, at a weekend or on a holiday: the time limits the law sets and why transfers sometimes take longer.

Updated 6 November 2026

When your bank receives the order

The order counts as received on the day you give it if that's a business day for your bank and you give it before the cut-off time. If you give it later, or at a weekend or on a holiday, it counts as received on the next business day. The law lets each bank set its cut-off time, near the end of the day 1. If you schedule a transfer for a date, that date is the day of receipt, or the next business day if it isn't one 1.

Weekends and holidays

A business day is a day on which the bank is open to carry out the payment, and for accounts opened online the calendar of the place where the bank has its registered office applies 1. SEPA transfers between banks are, however, settled on every day TARGET is open, including national holidays such as 6 January or 12 October 3, so many arrive even on a holiday.

When a standard transfer sent before the cut-off time arrives at the latest, in a week without holidays 1.

Instant transfers

Instant transfers arrive within seconds, 24 hours a day, every day of the year 2. Since 9 October 2025 banks in the euro area must let you send them, and they can't charge you more for them than for a standard transfer 4. That doesn't make them free: if your bank charges for standard transfers, it can charge the same for instant ones.

Since that same date, before every euro transfer, standard or instant, your bank checks for free whether the payee's name matches the IBAN's holder and tells you whether it matches, nearly matches or doesn't match 5. It's your best defence against an IBAN changed on a fake invoice.

If the transfer doesn't arrive

  1. Check with your bank that the order was carried out and on what date, and that the IBAN is right with the IBAN validator.
  2. Ask the payee to check with their bank: the receiving bank must credit the money as soon as it arrives 1.
  3. If it still doesn't appear, complain in writing to your bank's customer service department.
Can I cancel a transfer?

Once your bank has received the order, you can no longer revoke it. If you scheduled it for another day, you can cancel it until the end of the business day before 1.

Does an instant transfer cost more?

It can't cost more than an equivalent standard transfer at your bank 4.

What is verification of payee?

The free service with which, since 9 October 2025, your bank checks before every euro transfer whether the payee's name matches the IBAN's holder 5.
